Professor Jim Joy

As the leader for GMIRM globally, Jim Joy is currently working as Manager of Risk Management Services with JKTech. Previous to January 2011 he was Professor and Director of the Minerals Industry Safety & Health Centre (MISHC), also part of the SMI at the University of Queensland.

For over 25 years he has worked on mining industry risk management projects, as an internationally-recognised facilitator, technical expert, presenter and trainer.

Jim has had company advisory roles for WMC, BHP Billiton and Xstrata, and until recently was the Anglo American Chair of Risk Management which involved development of their global HSE risk management education and training initiatives.

Wynand van Dyk
more…Technical Lead for GMIRM Africa

Wynand has been involved deployment of the Anglo American SHE Risk Management Process, the forerunner to GMIRM, over the past three years. He has facilitated many executive and management level courses worldwide, getting the GMIRM message out to hundreds of participants as a result! In addition, he has delivered several courses to train internal trainers in a company for courses at supervisory levels. Wynand is a risk coach and an experienced risk assessment facilitator. Wynand is currently the technical lead in the GMIRM operational team for Africa.

Wynand holds a B.Eng (Chemical Engineering) & Ph.D. (Chemical Engineering) from the University of Stellenbosch. During his 20 year career in mining, he held various positions in the PGM, Diamond & Consulting fields. Some of his previous positions include:

  • Project manager for more than US$150million of PGM capital expansion projects
  • Senior manager for a Base Metal Refinery
  • Deployment leader for the Lonmin PLC 6 sigma deployment that back-to-back won the ‘Best achievement in manufacturing’ category at the Global Six Sigma Awards, and
  • Senior Technical Manager of the 3rd largest Platinum producer in the world

Wynand is founding director of his own company, Arete Consultants which specialises in process optimization, risk management, metallurgical accounting systems, 6 sigma strategic alignment and project management.

Linda MacLeod Brown

Linda’s role in the GMIRM global strategic team is in ensuring employees in different companies engage with the content and messages of GMIRM. She is responsible for the design and tailoring of GMIRM content to suit different company needs, cultures and brand.

Linda has 25 years international experience in blue-chip and not-for-profit environments, with a successful track record spanning communication, HR and CSR. In the nineties, whilst working with BP, she founded an enterprise agency, using private sector funds to provide loans and mentoring to new small businesses. Over the years, she has worked with NGOs interested in enterprise development, making business plans sustainable and helping big business positively influence poverty reduction through core business. She spent 4 years as UK Chair of a small international charity, iDE, creating income and livelihood opportunities for the rural poor in Africa and Asia.

Linda works with multinational clients building cohesive communication and engagement strategies, with a focus on effective safety and HSE communications in the mining industry, helping to embed change with practical strategies, tools and tactics. Past projects have included new manufacturing and IT developments, employee communication tools in different languages and spanned the whole communication and engagement spectrum.

Phil Tanner

Phil is an independent associate with Cardeas and is a focused EHS risk management professional with significant practical experience in both developed and developing nations. He is skilled in assessing and reviewing the effectiveness and on-the-ground implementation of Risk Management Processes. Phil has been involved with the Anglo American Group for 26 years, most recently as part of their Safety Risk Management Programme and Peer Reviews.

Phil is a non-executive director of Digby Wells Environmental, a South African company with international expertise in delivering comprehensive environmental and social solutions for clients in diverse sectors including mineral resources, mining and construction.

Lee Ewing

Lee Ewing has over 17 years’ experience in Operations, Logistic and Project Management. Lee has worked for leading companies in both the IT and Travel Industries where she gained experience as a qualified Business Analyst, Marketing Manager and Project Manager for Conferencing and Events.

In 2004, Lee founded her own business, Frontline Events which she has managed successfully and has gained a reputation for her excellent service and management style. Lee has an impressive Client portfolio and has travelled extensively with her work gaining knowledge of both the local and international markets. Lee joins the GMIRM team of experts in managing the operational and logistics aspect, implementing strategic planning initiatives and business development activities. Lee will be the Account Manager for the clients of GMIRM Pty Ltd in South Africa.

Allison Halbert
Office Managermore…

Allison has joined Jim Joy in Australia as the Program Administrator/Office Manager for the GMIRM team at their JKTech Hope Island office.

She comes to the team with over fifteen years experience in different industries – having worked with client and in administration in Real Estate and Business Brokering as well as managing administration in a multinational paint company. Allison is now again making the most of her expertise in office management, administration and client liaison for GMIRM.
